  • CH Recommends : Cold in Berlin, Danse Society and Wake

OK – so here is a tasty show and a half we well recommend if you can make it.

    Cluny 2 – April 11th

Headlined by Cold in Berlin, to celebrate their 3rd album, ‘The Comfort of Loss and Dust’.  The bill is completed by the legendary Danse Society and local post-garage rockers Wake.

More about each band, to wet your appetite.

Cold in Berlin are one of the many excellent bands in the UK post-punk scene and put on a spellbinding live performance, they’ve played a range of events from Whitby Goth Weekend to Candle-Fest and woo’d crowds at each.   Their new album promises to be darker, slower and better – to lift directly from the press release : A black mass of punk rock, doom-gaze awaits the listener, fired by the Gothic imaginings of vocalist/lyricist Maya. With its dark soundscapes spun in haunting imagery and a feeling of the uncanny, The Comfort of Loss & Dust plays like the aural accompaniment to a Hermann Hesse nightmare. The down-tuned guitars and powerful drums create a tide of sound; carrying Maya‘s vocals as she twists and writhes through the murky waters of love, loss and bone-shaking lust.

The Danse Society : Originally formed in 1980, The Danse Society had assorted hits in the indie charts including ‘Somewhere’, ‘We’re so Happy’, ‘2000 Light Years from Home’ (see below) and the double A-side of ‘Clock’/’Continent’.   Although the band split in 1987 they recently reformed and are doing shows again.

Wake : aka Joseph O’Donnell and Jack Hope are known for being one of the most explosive and attention-grabbing bands on the local scene at the minute, expect their set to contain deafening levels of riffage and some serious sick rhythms.

OK, I nicked that from NARC – but they summed them up perfectly.

    And… the best bit…

Tickets are just £6 in advance.  Yep.  £6 in advance.  You can grab them from seetickets here – or from Reflex Records – or pay a bit more on the door on the night (£8)

  • Skeletal Family – playing at Charnel House in March

    skeletalfamilyExciting news people.

We’ve been hinting about some Gothic legends coming to Charnel House – well – here is the news.

On March 7th, we’ll have a special acoustic performance from Skeletal Family.

This is fairly big news, the band recently played at the Academy and have done many high profile shows since their return, but they’re doing a very special stripped down acoustic tour, which includes playing as part of The Charnel House, in Butlers, in March.

Famed for hits such as ‘Promised Land’, ‘So Sure’ and ‘She Cries Alone’ it will certainly be interesting to hear how these classics and others transcribe onto an acoustic set up.

As previously, we do need to increase the entry fee on this night to accommodate the extra costs of putting on a band – but we’ve crunched our calculators and managed to keep this down to £5 – that’s a fixed £5 regardless of whether you buy in advance or pay on the door.  We know some people like advance tickets, so these are available – otherwise just come along and pay on the night.

If you want advance tickets – you can nab them from Reflex Records, www.seetickets.com or why not get one off us on Feb 7th at Charnel House (at Butlers) or Feb 14th at Dark Nation (at the Globe) ?

Here’s a classic of there’s for you to enjoy 😀

  • Charnel House Mailing List

New for 2015 we’re going old school with a mailing list.

Mails will be sent infrequently (unlikely to be more than twice a month) with reminders of our next date, offers and other news about things we’re up to.   We will also be collecting email addresses at our events – you can sign up below.  We won’t be selling your address on to anyone else and it will only be used for The Charnel House mailing list which will be related to our events (and others you may like).

  • Kev’s 2014 albums of the year

As I’m sure you know – each year Kev likes to list his top 20 albums of the year.  Picked across a broad sense of the so-called Shwarze-Szene that includes everything from Goth, Post-Punk, EBM, Industrial, Gothic-Metal, etc. it doesn’t include out and out rock and metal hence the absence of bands like The Marmozets and Beartooth (and he wasn’t quite sure where to place Pvris despite them often being played on his show)

This is the list, if there’s someone there you don’t know – why not check them out? As always these are present in a podcast which you can listen to here
